What Bob from Switzerland forgot to tell you is that it is one down from neutral, and four gears UP from neutral.

To start, you pull in the clutch, and press down on the shift until it doesn't go any farther.

The best thing to do , if you can wait, is take the safety course. Here in Maryland, if you just signed up now, you would probably be on the list for August. You can go hang out at the class, though, and if one of the signees doesn't show, then you can get their place. I was 4 minutes late, and almost lost my spot. I didn't know a thing about riding before hand. If you can find a friend to take you out first, just to let you do some basic stuff like starting the bike, sitting on it, rolling it a little, maybe even proceeding in first gear, you will not be as nervous when you start the course. Wish I had done that. I thought riding would be easier than it turned out to be. A lot to remember at one time.
